FRIENDSHIP QUILTS
We are often asked about “Friendship Quilts”; what are they, who makes them and where are they made. In the Quinte Quilters’ Guild, Friendship Quilts have come to be known as the quilts made for people in need and who are ill in the community, distributed through various organizations in and around the City of Belleville. There is a need for quilts year round for warmth, comfort and a feeling that someone cares.
Quilters meet at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, located on the corner of Victoria and Church Streets in Belleville, Ontario. They meet from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month. We do not meet in the months of July, August or December.
Quilts are made in various sizes. The most popular size being about a twin size, or 39” by 74”. Children’s quilts are quite often made in a smaller size of approximately 35” by 50”. There are no requirements for pattern, but we do require that quilts be made of new materials only.
Quilters get together at St. Andrews and put kits together for quilting by the general membership, (kits being available at each General Meeting). They also sort fabrics; sew kits together; hand quilt; tie quilt tops; prepare bindings for quilts; bind quilts, piece tops or machine quilt. There are lots of jobs that need to be done that do not require a lot of quilting knowledge. It’s a great place to practice your skills, learn new skills, and make new friends.
If you are unable to join us in putting these charity quilts together, perhaps you might consider donating any of the following: fabrics (100% cotton); threads; battings.
During the year 2011, Friendship Quilters made and distributed 107 quilts to local community charitable organizations. We hope to match this number in 2012 and we are off to a good start.
Mark these dates in your calendar and plan to bring a bag lunch with you (and your sewing machine if you can) and join us for a fun day of sewing:
